spanish designer carlos tiscar created the altavoz modular shelf system to mimic the form of loudspeakers.
the design consists of a series of boxes each with angled interior sides. the slight angle of the sides creates
a visual amplification and adds shadow to the form. the modules come in three sizes matched to the A4,
A3 and A2 paper size formats. these can be arranged in a variety of ways, mounted on the wall, sitting
on a desk or even on the floor. tiscar explained that some of the inspiration came from the architecture of
le corbusier and artist jorge oteiza, both shown below.

broadway malyan will design the new state of the art national heart centre in singapore. this project is part
of the larger redevelopment of singapore general hospital’s outram campus. the ten story building will
feature active hospital zones on the first six floors and administrative and research space on the upper four
levels. courtyards gardens and other open space is integrated throughout the building to help speed up
healing through natural light, ventilation and air purification. these common spaces were also designed to
encourage socializing and interaction among patients, staff and visitors. the front facade of the building
showcases these spaces, along with the cut-away in the rear. the project is set to be complete in 2012.

earlier this month construction of the breakfast machine project began at platform21, amsterdam.
under the direction of designer yuri suzuki and artist masa kimura, visitors sketched, built
and tested many inventive solutions. last weekend the project was completed - the machine
was ready and served all-day breakfasts consisting of omelet, coffee and toast with jam.

new york based asymptote architecture is nearing completion of their yas hotel project,
in abu dhabi, uae. the yas hotel is a 500-room, 85,000-square-meter complex which is
due to open on october 30, 2009 to coincide with the formula 1 etihad airways,
abu dhabi grand prix.
the yas hotel is part of the ambitious 36-billion-dollar yas marina development
and accompanying formula 1 raceway circuit, which is also near completion.
the main feature of the project's design is a 217-meter expanse of sweeping, curvilinear
forms constructed of steel and 5,800 pivoting diamond-shaped glass panels. this grid
shell component affords the building an architecture comprised of an atmospheric
like veil that contains two hotel towers and a link bridge constructed as a monocoque
sculpted steel object passing above the formula 1 track that makes its way through
the building complex. the grid-shell visually connects and fuses the entire complex
together while producing optical effects and spectral reflections that play against the
surrounding sky, sea and desert landscape. the architecture as a whole 'performs' as
both an environmentallyresponsive solution as well as an architecture of spectacle
and event.

the melbourne recital centre & MTC theatre are two of the most recent projects by the australian firm
ashton raggatt mcdougall. while the buildings operate separately, they are connected together on the
same block in the city’s arts district. on the left side is the melbourne theatre company and on the right
is the melbourne recital centre.
the MTC theatre features a distinctive facade composed of white steel tubing arranged in geometric
patterns that appears three-dimensional when viewed from the right angle. it was designed to look
best at night and has a simple black and white colour palette accented with a vibrant red. inside the
geometric pattern is continued through the lobby space. the theatre itself features perforated walls
that are backlit to reveal a text motif.
the melbourne recital centre on the right is a larger building featuring a two level recital hall and
a smaller performance space. the building’s facade is white with an inscribed cell-like pattern that is
repeated in the honeycomb glass window. the exterior was also inspired by packaging design,
drawing references to packing foam. the recital hall is stands out with its wood paneled wall and
ceiling. the design was specifically engineered for the highest possible sound quality and still
manages to display a macro wood grain pattern.

here is architectures david tajchman's proposal for the tall emblem structure,
located in the zaabeel park dubai.
standing at 170 meters tall 'cloud city' consists of a three level platform.
the first level is the children's library which is designed with inclined surfaces.
at the second level are three auditoriums, which can be configured in various
ways that rotate around the elevators axis. the upper floor is located above
the auditorium is a panoramic restaurant also rotating 360 degrees.

an underground park is located in the park, under the pond, prohibiting cars to
be driven in the park. natural light crosses the water to light up the parking, while
at night artificial light from the parking lights up the water surface of the pond.
a footbridge at water level crosses the pond, bringing visitors to the elevators core.
four legs made of white perforated concrete surround three elevators and an emergency
staircase leading visitors to a cloud city. each elevator is a transparent capsule that
provide views of the city through holes in the concrete structure. at night, elevators
are illuminated displaying their progression in altitude.

adam kalkin created the ‘kalkin house’ as an exhibition space for the shelburne museum in vermont.
when it originally opened in 2001 the home was named ‘collector’s house’ and showcasing pieces form
the museum’s vast collection. today the home has a new curatorial purpose as a gallery for contemporary
design. the structure is made from three shipping containers, located inside a large steel shed. the containers
make up the two bedrooms with ensuite washrooms and a study. the outer shed features a double story
garage door opening on both sides to open up the space to the outdoors. at the western end the shed has
been extended to create a protected outdoor area which is enclosed with large curtains made from sail
material. inside there is also a large kitchen area in the centre of the home with steel staircases on either side.

continuing our coverage of the silos competition in amsterdam here is dutch firm
aaarchitecten bv's proposal.
keeping with the industrial background of the silos, their proposal consisted of
concrete squares in front of a perforated corten steel facade.
the building features a restaurant, a presentation room, retail space for tools
and construction material, learn&work spaces for craftsmanship and rentable
spaces for small creative business.
a 23 meters high escalator invites visitors to experience the silooos, passing
through all the activities in both silos. eventually you arrive at the restaurant,
the presentation space and the roof terrace on the top floors, providing a beautiful
view over amsterdam.
from the spiral stairs, glass bridges in between the silos provide connections
between the small businesses and the large education space, tying both silos
together and at the same time expressing the intertwining of education and practice.

'bikes and chill' by aaarchitecten be and uq design
aaarchitecten bv together with uq design have received first prize in the poly products
competition for their project 'bikes and chill'.
constructed from fibre reinforced composite material the covering hides a semi
recessed bicycle parking facility, whilst the outside has the shape of a bench where
people can rest and relax. the bike bench consists of separate components that can be
connected to form a curving pattern. ' bikes and chill' was initially conceived for
the square outside the hague central station, netherlands but it can also be used
in other environments such as schools and parks.
