LAN architecture were awarded first prize in a competition to rehabilitate an industrial district in hamburg.
the competition ‘neue hamburger terrassen’ aims to transform this once industrial area on the river elbe into
a residential neighbourhood connected to the city of hamburg. 20 european architecture studios participated
in the sketch phase and LAN architecture will realize the first phase of the project as the first place winners.
the first phase consists 80 housing units in the north of the area covering 7000 sq. m to be completed by
2010. these housing units reference the typology of the terraced houses of the workers residences. there will
be a mix of individual houses and multi-unit structures. they will be surrounded by external and enclosed
green spaces. parking for the units is clumped together encouraging pedestrian friendly streets with limited
car circulation. to unit the many buildings in the master plan, the facade are kept very classic a regular to
give the development a unified image.

LAN architecture designed this double skinned residential building for a competition in paris. although they
eventually lost out in the competition the building has a number of unique features worth highlighting.
the structure of the building is rather distinct because it uses a double skin that helps insulate the building,
while the outer most skin produces energy through photovoltaic cells. composed of meta, this outer layer
would also serve as a sun barrier all year long, giving the building high thermal performance. the design of
the building aimed to integrate compact living in a vertical tower. the building would have bordered a park
on the south and west, overlooking the city of paris.

austrian firm innocad have sent us in images of their recent project 'rose am lend'.
the building is part of the development and transformation of one of the most complex
areas of the city of graz.
'rose am lend' includes 11 apartments, with urban living spaces and businesses on
the ground floor.
the design borrows from the existing building and includes a rose motif which is a reference
to the time when the building was constructed during the baroque period in the 18th century.

was the third museum of its kind to be established in europe (1872).

to embrace and swallow the worshipper into its scaly body.

'flying colors of dubai' by hongbo lu
canadian architect hongbo lu received the third prize for his 'flying colors of dubai'
design for the zaabeel park tall emblem structure.
'flying colors of dubai' consists of hundreds of colorful flakes positioned around a
curved elevator structure. the flakes are scattered along the site at low levels and
come closer aas they go up and finally form an upward mass reaching 160m high.
the proposed scheme is located in the site with an open plaza facing the lake and the
route along it. the conference facility and the children library are located at the east
and west sides of the plaza so the central plaza is well connected to visitors' route around
the structure. scattered flakes merged with the surrounding landscape would provide
shady spots for visitors while the main part of the mass provides shade to the plaza
to make it a comfortable gathering place suitable for many activities.
using the latest structural material the 'flying' flakes will be almost invisible. the flakes
would act like solar panels that would not only provide shading but also generate electricity
at the same time.

opening today is aberystwyth arts centre, designed by UK firm heatherwick studio,
the architectural commission will provide much needed studio and workshop space
for arts organisations in wales.
striking in design the simple timber?frame buildings are clad with a bespoke crinkled
stainless steel system that creates a shimmering futuristic appearance, reflecting
the greenery of the site. the special cladding system was fabricated on site using
a contraption similar to a victorian mangle that deformed the steel into its irregular form.
the studios sit within woodland, and over time will blend further into the maturing
landscape around them.

upon first glance this might look like people swimming on top of a submerged city. it is in fact
an ad created for HSBC created by ogilvy & mather mumbai ad agency, india. the whole idea behind
the campaign is to raise awareness of the dangers of global warming. an aerial photo of a city's
skyscrapers is glued to the base of a swimming pool to create the effect.
乍看之下，真的好像在城市頂端游泳，感覺很不賴耶！
可是其實這是要提醒我們對全球暖化的危機意識喔～

franklin azzi architecture designed 'passive house', through renovating a former
hunting house in normandy, france. the extension consists of wood, canvas covers
a camouflage of the cuban army. above is a wooden terrace overlooking the valley.
slabs of the house to the left and right include a heated floor and external industrial
sockets. in front of the house is a bunker made from concrete for an office.
the project meets the requirements of high environmental quality as it includes
rainwater collection, the use of solar energy (hybrid) and geothermal energy, and reduction
of raw material by optimizing the efforts to structure. the assembly of the structure was done
on site with all recyclable materials from a distance of 100km. wood and vegetable fibers
are used for the walls providing insulation and windows provide natural ventilation, etc.

fifty years after the realization of frank lloyd wright’s renowned design,
the solomon r. guggenheim museum is celebrating the golden anniversary
of its landmark building with the exhibition frank lloyd wright: from within outward,
co-organized by the guggenheim foundation and the frank lloyd wright foundation.
the exhibition which opened on friday brings together sixty-four projects designed
by one of the most influential architects of the 20th century, including privately
commissioned residences, civic and government buildings, religious and performance
spaces, as well as unrealized urban mega-structures. presented on the spiral ramps of
wright’s museum through a range of mediums; including more than 200 original
frank lloyd wright drawings, many of which are on view to the public for the first time,
as well as newly commissioned models and digital animations.

the gordon strong automobile objective was conceived by frank lloyd wright
as a project for businessman gordon strong to provide views on the summit
of the sugar loaf mountain and serve as an objective for short motor trips.
the spiraling roadways, cantilevered to allow full views, were supported by
a vast dome 150 feet in diameter. under the dome wright proposed a planetarium,
to be surrounded by a circular gallery containing aquaria and natural-history exhibits.
